Has anyone any experience with including CC-licensed data (be it a photograph or whatever) in a "typical" publication like GRL or JGR? The AGU website has this singularly useless statement under manuscript preparation:
Copyrighted Material
Authors who use material (e.g., graphics, tables) from another author or copyright holder must obtain written permission to do so. This includes any figures redrawn but basically unaltered or with only slight modifications.
Permission must allow for the distribution of the material in any and all media in current and future formats.
Obtaining permission can be a lengthy process, so please make sure that you have the necessary permissions before you submit your manuscript to AGU.
Written permission(s) should accompany the manuscript when submitted. Articles will not be published until permissions are received at AGU.
Their copyright permission form has this more useful statement:
Copyright Permission for Reprinted/Modified Figures/Tables
If any of the figures/tables in your article are reprinted or modified from another source (this includes any that were redrawn but
are basically unaltered or have only slight modifications), you must obtain and provide AGU with original letter(s) (fax or e-mail not
acceptable) from the copyright holder(s) granting permission to use them in your article before your article may be published. If the
original copyright holder has given blanket permission for reuse with credit, a copy of the published permission statement is
sufficient. If the material is in the public domain, please provide confirmation of this in an original letter. Material originally published
in AGU publications does not require copyright permission as long as proper credit is given.
So, on the face of it, it sound like if I find a web-hosted photograph that's licensed under one of the more liberal CC licenses, I can just give AGU the link to the photograph and to the license? Can it possibly be that simple? Has anyone actually done this?
who knows?
That certainly is how it *Should* work. But I haven't tried it myself, and in general I'm not all that impressed with AGU's tech-savviness. Let us know what they say if you do try it.
