Is it possible to set up subscriptions to certain threads such that I could get an email when someone responds to a thread I'm interested in?

Yes, it is possible

However, Orrery.us is not set up for it at the moment. We'll look into implementing this feature, and post back when we've got it working (with the caveat that it might be a while).

For the moment, you'll have to live with using the recent posts link.

Subscriptions are getting spammed

There seems to be a bug in the subscriptions service. Anonymous comments are allowed on stories, but they are queued for review by our editors. The subscription service appears to be sending out notifications for comments that have not yet been approved for the site. Anonymous posting to the site will be temporarily disabled until we can work out the issues with the subscription service. We apologize for any inconvenience.

I believe that I have found a solution to this problem.

Anonymous visitors to the site can now post comments again (although they will be held for moderation, just like always), and users that have set up subscriptions should not be notified until a comment actually gets posted to nodes that are being monitored.

The only difference from before is that notification e-mails will be sent out periodically (at the moment this period is hourly), rather than as soon as changes happen. We do not believe that this will significantly impact the utility of the subscriptions feature.
